I watched Vera Drake today and I can see why it was up for oscars. The story was very interesting and actually rather unique. The acting was pretty good as well. You didn't really get to see the casts acting abilities until the last half of the movie. I was watching and thinking well really this movie is nothing special so far, as you get farther into the movie thats when the story gets better and the talent shows up. I can see why Imelda Staunton was nominated for the Academy Award. (I didn't see Million Dollar Baby so I can't tell you who's performance I thought was better.)



It was about this woman who performs abortions on women in the 1940's. she uses disinfectant and soap and squirts it into the women. One girl got sick from it and had to have surgery, the mom knew who Vera was cause she used to work with her at the laundry place. Well the cops came to her house and arrested her. The family had no clue she was doing it. husband/ son and daughter were shocked when they heard why she was arrested. She went to jail for 2 and a half years because the judge wanted to set an example. She wasn't getting any money for it, she genuinely saw it as helping the girls out. and she was doing it for about 20 years.
